An injection of instant tech talent

Zego are an international insurance provider, offering commercial motor insurance to businesses across the globe. After securing funding in 2021, their goal was to double their headcount from 265 to over 500 employees by the end of the year. With a rise in demand for technologists, they needed support in finding diverse, job-ready tech talent to fill out their existing Engineering team.

 

 

The Challenge

At the time they reached out to us, in 2021, Zego had recently taken a large investment to rapidly grow their business. With ambitious goals of tripling their Engineering team, Zego were struggling to expand at scale whilst ensuring diversity among their junior tech hires

Zego wanted to grow their team, starting with an initial hire of 3 new Junior Engineers within a month, so traditional, more transactional recruitment wasn’t the best option for them. They needed talent with the necessary tech stack that would also be a great cultural fit, meaning they needed to take a different approach. 

Characteristics of our solution

Alongside our bespoke training courses, we run ongoing coding programmes, creating an ever-growing pool of talent. Individuals join our open programmes and we teach them to code before helping them find a new role within the technology sector.

This means that we have a sustainable pool of immediately available tech consultants, all of whom have been fully trained and are job-ready. Because this course attracts people from a range of backgrounds, and not just the often-homogenous pool of existing technologists, our talent pool is incredibly diverse and more representative of wider society. Diversity was key to Zego throughout this hiring process and was something we were able to ensure at every stage for them.

Zego interviewed 3 consultants from our talent pool and offered a role to all of them – not only did these consultants fulfil Zego’s commitments to diversity and equal opportunity, but they were also a great cultural fit and had the necessary tech stack to thrive within the company. Our Full-Stack Engineering programme allowed Zego to take these Engineers and place them into multiple different areas of the business extremely quickly.

Outcomes & Benefits

The main benefit of this solution was the speed with which we were able to successfully place new hires into the company. Thanks to our existing pool of tech talent, we are able to deploy people rapidly, which is perfect for businesses going through funding stages or looking to scale-up quickly.

Because we’ve trained the consultants ourselves, and have regular feedback from the training coaches, we are confident in the abilities of our entire _nology candidate pool. As such, clients are guaranteed strong, quality talent with the necessary skills to positively contribute to the business. We are able to assist in seamless transfer and onboarding, and regularly check in with our placements during their time with our clients.

Diversity is another key factor – this is something that is becoming more and more important to businesses, whether they are start-ups or global companies going through a scale-up. Due to the way our candidate pool is built and grown, we’re able to ensure a diverse range of applicants for each new hire a client wants to make – all without compromising on timeframe or quality of talent.

Number of placements and time to hire

We placed 3 consultants with Zego within 3-4 weeks. These roles were all within their Engineering team – we placed a Security Engineer, a Front-End Developer, and a Back-End Developer.

A focus on D&I

Of the 3 consultants we placed, 2 were female and 2 were from BAME backgrounds. We continuously add to the _nology talent pool through our open learn-to-code programmes. This ensures more diversity than many tech talent pools built through traditional, transactional recruitment methods. Our talent pool is reflective of wider society, not just the tech industry, meaning we are able to quickly deploy people from a huge range of backgrounds, previous careers, ethnicities and races, and genders.
